The Washington DC Temple

Jaunt to DC








We left for DC last Thursday afternoon to have a little vacation at the beginning of Spring Break. After a rough start on the road (baby crying, Josh getting car sick), we actually made it down without stopping.

Friday morning, while Susie was teaching half-day, we ventured to the Air and Space Museum annex near Dulles Airport. It was raining that morning, so we opted to do this instead of going to the Mall. It was a truly amazing museum, we couldn't believe how many airplanes filled the hangar. My favorite part was seeing the Space Shuttle Enterprise. The kids loved exploring. We headed over to Iwo Jima, and then met Susie at her house. After a tour of the apartment and a trip down memory lane as she lives in the same townhouse complex I did when I lived there, we headed over to the Tidal Basin. It had stopped raining by now. We loved walking around the FDR memorial and the Jefferson and seeing the Cherry Blossoms. Mark had a great time telling the kids about how we got engaged (at the FDR). This is a picture of us at that spot. (12 years, 5 kids, 2 minivans, 2 houses later...a little worse for the wear). We were disappointed that our plan for dinner didn't work out....we were looking forward to Generous George's but apparently they had closed down the Duke Street location. We ordered pizza in the room instead, and Mark and Suz took the kids swimming. Susie and I then went to Target to get her all ready for her trip to Puerto Rico.

Saturday morning, we headed by metro (from King Street) to the White House. Josh really wanted to see this. It was a sunny, brisk day. We spent a good deal of time at the White House Visitor's Center which the kids loved as they had a lot of kid friendly activities. We headed down on foot to the Mall, hoping to see some of the American History Museum. By this time (noon), the mall was super crowded. After a few minutes in the museum, we decided to go back outside and wait for Susie to meet us at the Washington Monument. There was a kite flying festival so it was very fun to see hundreds of kites. Mark and I had been to that festival 12 years before when we were dating.

Deciding to fast forward our plan of visiting the Capitol, we just headed back to Virginia. We felt we only had one metro ride left in us. By this time, pushing a double stroller around the Mall was no fun because of the crowds. We took a break at the hotel and headed out for burgers and shakes, followed by more swimming.

Sunday morning found us bright and early at the Lincoln Memorial. This is where Matthew really wanted to go. He enjoyed making videos on Mark's iPhone narrating at the various sites. Maybe he's a future filmmaker. We got packed up and in Church clothes to go to the Colonial Singles Ward with Susie. We loved hearing her sing in the choir. It was fun to be at her ward with her. One last stop was to the Washington DC Temple Grounds and visitor's center. So many great memories this weekend and of the past. We love DC!

2 months old




Crazy hair! Sleeping long stretches at night! Delightful! Good napper! Chunky thighs! Bright eyed! Alert! Easy going! Yes, he's the perfect baby and he's already 2 months old.
