My big fat tonsillectomy

Hey all,

I found a website entitled my big fat tonsillectomy tonight when I googled "recovering from a tonsillectomy."
And it made me laugh and it made me scared.

This Wednesday is the big day. I will be relieved when this is all over and I can just go on with my life, but surely there will be something else around the corner. There always is. We're settling in for a two week recovery. On the agenda for early next week: Stocking the freezer with popsicles. Getting a stack of books and movies.

Mark and I had a nice date on Sept. 30. I met him in the city for dinner. It was cheap too, because we had a gift certificate. Everything was so wonderful, life was great, I was newly pregnant, the kids were all adjusted to the new school year. Then Oct. 1 the rug was pulled out from underneath us and life has been a challenge since. The miscarriage, the call to be bishop, the 4 bouts of tonsillitis and now the surgery. We often say if we could just go back to Sept. 30...

Oh well, enough sobbing. Things are working out. People are here for us. Details are falling into place. Peggy is coming. Tender mercies are popping up here and there. Please wish us luck and say a prayer or two as well.

I love you because...

Susie, my little sister, is always teaching. She is a teacher. One of her favorite mantras is "leave them better than you found them." She visited last weekend and definitely left me better than she found me. One thing she taught me is "I love you because". When you tell someone you love them, add because and then a reason. She found this effective when she had difficult mission companions, but it also works for children and busy husbands.

Josh, I love you because you are funny. You made me laugh so hard today with your jokes about our valentines. You are always singing some kind of song and you bring a big smile to my face.

Caroline, I love you because you know what's important. At inaguration time, you had to fill out a worksheet about what you would do if you were president. You said your most important priority was the environment because "I think we need to take better care of our planet." You said your least important priority was the military because "I think we should try stopping wars."

Matthew, I love you because you are sensitive. I love your preschool teacher wrote me a note in your notebook about how you were sad when they talked about slavery, specifically about how people were taken from their homes and made to work for no money. You are right--that is sad. I am glad Abraham Lincoln (as you said today) "made the world a better place"

Samuel, I love you because you ask for things so nicely and appropriately. "Pleasy please can we have a tiny baby sister?" (yes, I'd like that too) AND "My tummy says it's hungry for an apple."

Mark, I love you because you just accept me for who I am with all my quirks!

I could add other I love you becauses but I don't want to leave anyone out. But try it out on someone you love today. Especially for your Valentines.

F is For February and Frosting

So, I am a wee bit tired of making buttercream frosting.

1) Made a batch for Matthew's cupcakes for School
2) made a batch for Matthew's family birthday cake
3) Made a batch for Matthew's cupcakes for his birthday party
4) made a batch for the cupcakes for Girl scouts (yesterday)
5) made a batch for the sugar cookies today.

Phew.

Note to self: conversation hearts are cute and nostaglic, but Caroline and her friends much prefer to decorate with M and M's. Always buy Brach's conversation hearts...they are much superior in taste and texture to the other brands.

My dilema

I am waiting for Susie to get to NY. She's on the China bus which broke down outside of Baltimore and is now 2 hours behind schedule. Don't read this mom, but that means her train will get in at the earliest 1 a.m. The Bishop (for those who don't know, Mark is now the bishop) is exhausted so he's out for the night, all cuddled up with the croupy baby boy who is in our bed.

I don't quite know what to do with myself. I did some checking out at facebook, looked at some blogs and now I've reached the critical juncture. The DVR messed up my Thurs. shows, so I am retaping tomorrow night. Do I go to bed for an hour or so, or just stay awake. I don't want to miss her phone call.

This week of course has had it's ups and downs. It's just a stinky time of year. I always pictured myself dreading January more than February but February is not showing it's best self to me.

It's getting close to the anniversary of the death of my father...15 years. We had Matthew's birthday this week--I threw myself into birthday preparations and that's helped in a way. He's had the best 5 year old celebration and was super cute about it all. Did I mention that we planned Matthew to be a Feb. birthday because I wanted something to celebrate in February?

Mark is super busy at work and will be busy with the Toy Fair until the 19th or so. Plus we have winter vacation on the horizon. I am looking forward to not having a schedule--but also feeling the pressure to make it wonderful and memorable as well. Plus our school district tacked on an extra day so the fun begins this Friday.

I also met with the school librarian to get started on my next school project. Short lived--over by March 5th, but still will be a little busy until then. Maybe I need a good project (that doesn't involve organizing my house or photos or closets, etc.)

Look at me rambling here in the middle of the night. My contact fell out so that led to washing my face and brushing my teeth...maybe I will go take a little nap, though in my clothes.

I am happy to share...

Yesterday, we handed out in RS a cute folder with 4 handouts on food storage. It consumed my day Friday getting the copies made (saw a tender mercy as I prayed the church copier would work after jamming for a few times...didn't hurt that my cougar creations experience came in handy too.) We handed out a FHE lesson, conference talk, and 2 examples of planning for your 3 month storage. I am happy to share these documents with those who are not local...just send me an email or make a comment.
