a few details about the birth now

I didn't know how far I would get in blogging. So I posted the pictures first (see below) as Thomas is not loving sleeping in anything but arms. But he's asleep for a minute in the bassinette so I can write some details.

First let me say that I love being in the Facebook era for this birth. It was so fun to post a picture and other posts and hear immediately from friends and family far and near! We feel so loved!

Sunday during the day, I felt so crampy. I thought the baby had dropped. During church I was having a few contractions, then I came home and napped and everything stopped.

Monday we went through our normal day. Horrible wind swept rain. Went to the gym while Sammy was at preschool and did 40 minutes on the treadmill. Came home and napped. Picked up the kids. Started the homework routine and dinner.

About 5 p.m. I was feeling contractions. They were regular and timeable (some before had just felt like a constant backache). I downloaded an App called Contraction Master (awesome!) that with a touch of the screen I could time the contractions. Really really awesome. Mark got home at 6:30. We had FHE. By 7:30, I told him I needed to get serious about timing contractions. I put on Emma on PBS and watched for a while. I then packed for the hospital around 9. At 10, I got in the shower and felt they were coming one right after another. At 10:30 we called the midwife. At 10:40 we left for the hospital. At 11:15 we arrived at the hospital. He was born at 11:33! It went surprisingly fast (and I have theories about that which I will expound on maybe later.) What a blessing it was. When I got measured I was at an 8. I wouldn't have changed a thing...5th time is a charm I guess. It was just how I was hoping it would go.

Mark and I had a hard time agreeing on a name throughout the pregnancy. But we went to the temple on Friday night and I just felt distinctly there that his name was to be Thomas George. Thomas had been one of Mark's initial choices. Thomas is a family name on my side of the family, but we also liked the name, liked that it's the name of the prophet and the last name of the Dr. who saved Mark's life when he was in first grade. George is the name of my beloved grandfather and also an ancestor on Mark's side.

The hospital stay was short and sweet. Because I delivered before midnight, Monday night counted as the first of 2 nights. I hardly slept I was so pumped up. Tuesday Mark came with the kids after school. They were so excited. And then Mark and Sammy picked me up today around noon but of course, we didn't get released until close to 2 p.m. Why does it always take so long?

So here we are back to real life now! It seems like he's always been part of our family which is weird since he wasn't even here 2 days ago. We are in new baby heaven.

Our wonderful friend Heather took Sammy on Tuesday morning so Mark could visit us a the hospital. She took him to Target where she helped him purchase "spencer the duck" (we named him Spencer since that was the runner up name). Sammy always makes sure Thomas is not far from his duck. We thought we'd take a picture of T. with the duck each month to see how he is growing. So this is picture #1.

Getting there...

We are getting there.

It took me an hour to put the infant carseat together. I had washed the cover, then adjusted the straps, and inserted a bundle me. This isn't even yet installing it in the car.

I did my pre-admission paperwork for the hospital and made insurance calls.

Over the weekend, we did the test run to the new hospital in Sleepy Hollow. Mark was most interested in the logistics of getting there. I was most interested in seeing the labor rooms. Cool view of the Hudson from the hospital rooms. Very nice nurses. Good decision.

Tonight I have a call with the doula to go over all the details. I can't tell you how relieved I am to have her on our team. Last night and today I spent reading my Bradley method book and then my special VBAC binder I have compiled so I am familiar with everything again.

I ordered a changing table. This is my first changing table. I am excited. It should come Thursday.

I ordered matching quilts for the little boys.

This week I hope to get the bassinet down from the attic and all the bedding washed and set up. I also want to pack a bag for the hospital.

I have planned some fun things in the next couple of weeks to look forward to. This is critical to do. Wed. I am thinking pedicure while Sam is at preschool. It's important to have cute toes when you are pushing a baby out.

I am trying to remember that it's easier to take care of 4 kids than 5. I am still going to the gym, taking naps and spending time with my kids.

I am trying to help Mark remain relaxed about the baby (cuz his part is really hard!) and focused on work.

What do you do to get ready for a baby? Am I missing anything?
