Snow Day!

Today's been a great snow day. 1 p.m. and all is well. Just hope Sam will stop fussing in his crib and settle down for a long winter's nap.

I've had great satisfaction in making things with my kids today. We made Valentine's decorations, homemade chicken noodle soup (first time and I must say super yum) and chocolate chip cookies together.

I straightened up the basement in preparation for Kim and Gavin's visit next weekend.

I spent some good time this morning shaving my legs and sloughing off the dead skin on my feet. This is something I have wanted to do for days. Then I put on a fresh coat of dark red toenail polish. And I'm wearing flip flops around the house today.

Of course, the wii has been on a bit and that's been fine.

Maybe we can all watch Wall-E later this afternoon.

So far so good.

Things I am liking

1) I like baby lettuce from Stew's that comes in plastic container. I guess it's Earthbound Farms or some organic brand like that. I remember thinking it was pricey at the time, but it's stayed fresh for over a week now (unlike in bags where it turns brown).

2) I watched the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie last night called Loving Leah. It was so cute. I missed the first half hour (due to catching up on Betty) but really liked it. Of course, I am fascinated with the culture of Orthodox Jews since we live in NY and see them all the time. I don't know how realistic it was, but it was fun.

3) I am liking my contacts and even changed my part again. I like wearing my new sunglasses!

4) I am loving my new black turtleneck from Target, and the fact that i paid less than 3 dollars for it on the clearance rack. Guess I should wash it today since I wore it for 2 days straight (do you ever do that with new clothes?)

5) I am liking the thought of a snow day on Wednesday. Just sounds cozy.

6) I am liking At Last. Heard it on the radio today. I can't get it out of my head!

7) I am liking Lost! Only 2 more days until Wednesday!

And I'd like to thank...

In this awards season, I wish I could give out some statuettes to some people who just make life easier for me in the way they do their job. Here's a list...

1) Geri--she's the crossing guard. She always greets us with a smile and a wave, whether we are in the car or walking. She's one of my favorite people to see every day.

2) Zelda--This lady cracks me up. For Caroline's b-day, we went to the AG Place. She introduced herself as a personal shopper, and offered us her free services (and speedy checkout in a comfortable back room.) We are on her email list so she sends us updates when new items come into the store. I was sure happy to see her when we were in the City right after Christmas-- we avoided a LONG line by seeking her out.

3) Maxine--our neighbor's nanny. She told me that my jeans looked nice on me. That comment made me smile all that day.

4) Ms. Caroline and Mr. Abraham--Matthew's bus monitor and driver. Always thrilled to see them. They transport him to school and bring him home safely every day. I think she even healed me when I had strep in November. That's a story for a different day.

5) Jose and Avigar--my peeps at Lenscrafters. They've patched up Josh's glasses several times, and replaced many nosepads on mine.

6) Various gym instructors--notably Donna and Kathy. They are very inspiring to me!

I'm sure there are others I am forgetting. The orchestra is starting to play...must be escorted off stage now!

Mini-bagels: a review

Our little lady, Miss Caroline, prefers to take mini bagels to school for lunch. She would alternate with PB and J but she's got a peanut allergy kid in her class, so it's not an option. She'll also take Mac and cheese in a thermos on occasion and buys lunch on Friday--pizza day.

She prefers mini bagels from the bagel store. Not from the grocery store. So I get a dozen at a time, cut them in half and then freeze the rest.

Bagel store A's mini-bagels are 55 cents. You have to get there in the morning because they sell out during the day. If I know it's an afternoon bagel run, I call ahead and they will put a dozen aside for me. They have plain mini's and also whole grain, so I can get a few of those for myself. Cash only (which means I've got to carry enough cash which I never do.) This does take some planning. Sammy also likes to munch on them when we pick up the fresh bagels, providing him sustinence for any further errand running (it is halfway to Target).

Bagel store B's mini-bagels are 50 cents each. This store is across from the orthodontist so it's kind of convenient since we have to go to the orthodontist now and then. They only have plain minis. When I brought these home today (guess where I was this morning?) I found them to be delicious, but hard to cut. They are flatter than A's and I don't want to slice a finger off. Sammy was begging for a chocolate-chocolate chip muffin because they were just placed low enough in the bakery case to be within his sight range. That set me back an extra $2. So, it's actually cheaper to go to A.

So, it's bagel store A from now on. The pros are just good enough to give them a slight edge. These bagels also must be topped with whipped cream cheese. Temp-Tee is our favorite brand right now.

Last post on how great NYC is or so far 2009 is awesome!

So now it's back to real life.

We had a great overnighter, Mark and I! Thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for taking such good care of the kids.

We went to Lincoln Center and saw "Salute to Vienna." Mark and I had not been to Lincoln Center together and we loved it. It was a matinee performance, so we headed to dinner afterwards. We ate at a Mexican restaurant recommended by one of Mark's partners at work. We got cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery and hot chocolate too. This morning we went to MoMA and saw the special Van Gogh exhibit. Now I don't need to go to Amsterdam quite yet. I was glad we got in line at 9:15 this morning or else we might not have seen it. It was crowded. We went to the temple. We went to Chipolte for lunch. We really had a great time. Now we can get Christmas stuff put away and then we can get the house all organized.

Yep, 2009--so far, so good!
